Soooooo… First, the update…

The builder has had people back working on various bits and pieces, and the house is mostly complete from a date of handover point of view. However, there are still some things not done such as completing the render repairs. To add to the “kill me now” nature of this frustration, we are just about up for our three month maintenance period. In probably less than a week from now. Suppose we’d better get our list together and organise to send it off to them! Will post it here once we have everything together.

The good news is that shadeform has been and gone several times over to organise the shade sails that we ordered to be attached to our pergola! The came, they measured, they left. They came again, they measured again, they installed some metal bits and pieces and they left. They came again and installed some shades!! Without further ado…

Mostly installed but only one operational…

The operational one!!

All operational =)

Being modelled by the leopard

Gratuitous leopard pic (because she ROCKS).

Entry – Before

Entry – After. I made this!!

New shower handles. Bit more modern and in keeping with the rest of the house

Bit of paving. More than this has been done, I just forgot to take a pic before dark ;)

The next big project – the cat yard. The cat-proof mesh arrived yesterday =)

2 things…

1. We have covered up the mud. weed mat and layer of rubble.

2. They have taken away the plastic and blue tape in time for the party!! Still not painted, but apparently that is happening next week =)

I know… I’ve been slack… This post is long overdue, and it’s highly unlikely to satisfy those of you who have been requesting loads of pics. I might get a chance to get loads of pics this weekend at the housewarming, or better still you can visit and come and see for yourself? =)

So just as a bit of an overview of the goings on with the house…

The BEST. KITCHEN. EVAH! You can probably just see my funky soap dispenser if you look hard enough… I chose it because it kinda looks like a dalek!! Think I need to stick some m&ms or something to it to complete the look ;)

And again from a different angle)

Entry. We wanted a nice, big entry to showcase this fan, so it has pride of place. It was COMPLETE oversight that the entry is not centred (part of the original Longridge design that I didn’t bother modifying as I’d changed just about everything else), and thus the fan does not appear centred when looking through our magnificent glass door. So this pic shows inside the entry – where it still looks like it sits nicely in the middle of the wall ;)

This will look a lot better when I get around to building a better bench seat/shoe storage rack thingy. Perhaps next week. For now we’re borrowing Alyssa’s toy chest

The fish!! This is on the wall between the pantry and hallway. This wall has been earmarked since the very first iteration of the plan for having a fishtank built in. The plan is to knock a hole in the wall, have the fish tank inside of the pantry with just a flush glass face on this wall. We’ll likely place a picture frame around it so that it looks like a picture on the wall, but with live fish cruising about. The idea of putting this fish here is so that I see it everytime I walk by, and thus never lose sight of “the plan”. This will drive me nuts until I’ve finished it ;)

In the interim, it makes an excellent key rack =)
20101015-014234.jpg

Butterfly!!! For no other reason than it was a gift from my sister-in-law (my brother’s wife, Heather). I believe that she bought that for me as a gift during their honeymoon, and it has travelled with me from house to house ever since. Alyssa is completely smitten with it now =)
20101015-014255.jpg

WE HAVE A WORKING WASHING LINE!! w00t!! =) It was quite a lot of fun doing our midnight concreting. I’m sure the neighbours all think we’re mad – if we were sprung, that is…

And stormwater =))) We used a company called Spencer Stormwater. They were excellent. Extremely efficient, highly knowledgeable and wonderfully friendly. Highly recommended. Feel free to contact me if you want their details, although you should be able to locate them with the name. Probably not worth the phone call for any readers not in the Adelaide area, which I believe is most of you ;)

It has been raining almost non-stop since they left. This is almost awesome because we can finally start filling our 44000L of water tanks. I say almost because we still need to add taps and plugs to the base of the tanks to prevent losing all the water. We have the required parts, so that should happen tomorrow =)

As for progress (other than the stormwater)…

Today we had people out to measure the pergola in preparation of installing our retractable shade sails. They have also installed the hardware required to hook the sails on to, so we’re good to go. Apparently we should have them in within 2-3 weeks.

Today also was the day that the construction manager from Longridge Homes came to visit. He personally wanted to view the remaining works that were required. He agreed that the service to date was NOT good enough, was quite apologetic and seemed to lack understanding of just why the SS left things in the state that they were left. Much like us, really. He seemed quite embarrassed and ashamed that we now have to hold our housewarming party this weekend with all the lovely blue tape and plastic surrounding windows and particularly the front door, and has stated that he will have the people who are doing the render out to the house ASAP to have the works completed. Who knows, we might get TOTALLY lucky and have them out tomorrow before the party, but highly unlikely. Chris asked him if we could remove the blue tape for the party, and he actually seemed pained to say “no, please leave it there and I’ll have them come back and finish painting as soon as I can”. He shook his head in disbelief when I told him that apparently our SS expected us to live without access to the front door, and that the removalists had to rip a hole through the plastic to get through with our furniture when we were moving in. I had the chance to tell him that I couldn’t be happier that the SS was no longer with the company, and my only wish was that it had happened 12 months earlier. Not much more was really said on the subject – I figured that can wait until I’ve written my novel on all the problems that we had with the SS and forward that to their head office. Overall, a satisfactory visit. I look forward to seeing what action results from the meeting today, and feel really quite confident that things WILL get done. This man exudes a level of competence that the former SS couldn’t even dream about. I hope my suspicions are correct.

And with that, I think it’s time to go get my beauty sleep… I’m not getting any younger, you know… What with it being my 0×23rd birthday in <24 hours and all (that’s 35 for anyone requiring a decimal conversion)…

The front door. Complete. I think we are keeping the blue tape and plastic wrap, it just wouldn’t be the same now without it!

Today the sparkies hooked up the electronic strike to open the door. We can now use cards, remotes or microchips and a card reader to get into the house. It is also hooked into the CBus and alarm system so that a sequence of events take place when somebody enters the house using the card reader, and changes according to time of day

The vacpan =) we have one of these in the kitchen, ensuite, laundry and hallway to bedrooms and main bathroom. We have normal ducted vac inlets near the master bedroom, hallway to the other bedrooms, near the kitchen and one in the big office at the end of the house

Bit of my handiwork ;) this is the internal laundry door. We don’t want to leave the laundry open as a feature when you walk in the front door, so we gave the cats their own door to access the kitty litter

And Alyssa’s playroom =)

And our site supervisor said EVERYTHING will be complete within two weeks.

Only saving grace is that he’s “no longer employed by Longridge Homes”. Apparently they don’t feel it necessary to inform people who are still waiting on him to finish things…

Apparently we were not meant to actually USE our front door yet. We had to rip a hole through the plastic to allow the removalists access through the entry. This has been there since the day after PCI, and NO work has been done since the original patches to the render on this day, We still have white, patchy render against our beigey coloured house. It’s just lovely, and I really think the plastic and blue tape sets off my door beautifully. What do you think? Not to mention that we don’t want to add in the front decking until we know it won’t get paint drips all over it. Thanks Longridge for making us live this way. Appreciated. No, really. I’d sincerely recommend you to anyone wishing to build a home. Especially one where they have more than doubled your base price with the extensions, upgrades and options that have been added – obviously we haven’t paid ENOUGH for good service.

Christopher’s office. The strong winds tore away most of the covering, but he also had large sections of window covered.

My office window. Yes, the entire thing is covered just like the front door used to be. Isn’t it beautiful?

The view from inside my office. It would be a shame to actually be able to see out of our expensively upgraded western red cedar, double glazed windows.

Some pics of inside the house. Forgive us for the mess. Still in the process of moving.
The rest of my office. Recycling hubby’s old office furniture until I can get some time off work and build out my office properly.

His office.

Her “office”

Light fittings

Light switches and power points – we’ve used glass throughout the “public” areas of the house. All CBus integrated. We have white slimline through bedrooms and wet areas.

Cooktop and black mirror splashback. Would be much better without me in it ;)

Oven, microwave, cookbooks. I want to upgrade to stainless steel microwave, so any hints or tips on microwave killing greatly appreciated ;)

And the tiles!!

Pre-furniture. Partially cleaned.

More to come once we’ve unpacked and cleaned up a little more.

Apologies for being so long between posts. A mix of work and lack of interest to blame.

The cynic in me had been saying all along that Longridge won’t get their final payment until my house is complete because I feel like we’ll be fighting them for EVERY fix until it is otherwise done. Then after seeing so much action the day after PCI, Chris got so excited and just wanted his house. I joked at the time that it would signify a “drop all tools” approach to fixing the defects. Our SS still claimed that EVERYTHING would be complete within the allocated two weeks.

Could I be more right if I tried?

From the day of handover, NOTHING. FOR TWO WEEKS. Upon hassling SS we get dribs and drabs of work done. But my very first phone call from anyone looking for site access to do repairs? Two weeks to the day from PCI. The first work was done two weeks to the day from the previous batch that got Chris so excited and thinking we could actually trust them and take handover.

In all fairness, they have sent out some people in the past few days that have been absolutely brilliant, and also who have the ability to bypass the SS and go straight for management approval to get things done, repaired or replaced. Today saw a bunch of small fixes done that really have a large impact into how happy I am with this house as a home. Kim and Andy, I love you guys!! Any readers from Longridge, NEVER let these two go!! They have more personal ability in their toenail clippings than our SS has in his entire body or life force. Seriously. And apart from that, they just rock. Totally.

Photos…

My new baby… This has me much more excited in general than the entire house.

The beginnings of the built in bookshelves, and some slave labour.

Kitchen and new red stools!

Pergola. Fabricated wood posts, they look sensational and are a far more sustainable option than solid wood. They will be a perfect match to the windows when treated. The beams are painted surfmist to match the roof.

Another view of the pergola, this time looking upon the entire structure. Justin, our magnificent builder, did this in a day!! He did two days of prep in concreting and bolting steel to the rafters to secure the wood against, but the actual installation of the wood was done only today. Unbelievable. I cannot recommend Bettawood enough. These guys are pure, unadulterated awesome. Best prices, too. AND their website has a linux logo, so thems gotta be good guys!!

Now for tiles… LOVE these tiles.
Our entrance tile. This is to highlight orientation of the house. Seeing as we put so much into getting the solar passive design right, and orientation is a BIG part of that, we wanted a daily reminder as well as something that could be useful for sustainable house day when we finally open our home to the public for viewing and tips on what makes a sustainable house. Also, it’s a little bit geeky =)

Looking towards the entry

My office. Built in bookcase base seen around the edges. My plans here are for the book cases to look like they have been cut into the wall rather than built out from it, so it was important to get the base in and move the skirtings before the tiles went in.

ALMOST to the kitchen!! Hoping to have the main living area fully tiled by end of this week. Relying on Chris to take the photos as I will be in Melbourne from Thursday for a week.

Last, but definitely not least, gratuitous cat photo

I had the site supervisor from hell and all I got was these two bottles of wine (needed!!) and this labelled wine carrier to remind me of how much I hate them.

Free to good home (minus the wine)

So yesterday we had our PCI meeting. In attendance was my most favourite person in the whole wide world (our Site Supervisor), and independent inspector, Alyssa, Chris and myself.

It started off with a bit of a slanging match between the SS and myself (who woulda seen THAT coming, right?). There were some rather nasty holes in the wall that the inspector was asking about. The SS decided to tell the story that the clients had requested a bayonet gas point that needed venting, then changed their mind, and out of the goodness of his heart he had decided to fix it. I piped in and mentioned that the bayonet point was NEVER on the agenda as it would not fit the correct heater that the clients had ALWAYS told Longridge was planned for the area. We had always requested a capped gas point. They got it wrong. Out of the goodness of his heart indeed.

So we continued in this way for some time. There were no major flaws with the house. The SS expected us to take handover then and there, and we told him no way. Not until the major things on our list were fixed – such as the holes in the walls, internal and external. He mentioned that the external walls weren’t done yet as there hadn’t been appropriate weather. I told him he’d been aware that it needed fixing since January and he couldn’t tell me that no appropriate weather had been available since then. I mentioned at this time that he was NOT getting handover today because we had completely lost faith in him as a site supervisor, and Longridge as a builder, and had no faith that the fixes would be done once he had our money as he doesn’t seem capable of fixing ANYTHING in any form of decent timing.

That led to discussions of timing. The SS mentioned that this build had been done in a completely reasonable timeframe, and a house of this size SHOULD take 36 weeks from site scrape to completion. I reminded him that site scrape was actually 50 weeks ago (so where did the extra 14 weeks come from?). The look on his face was priceless.

So that was fun.

Today we went to see if any of the repairs had been started. ALL holes have now been repaired!! The render on the outside has been patched in several places, and there are no more stupid rough finishes. Given that this covers the majority of our list, we called Longridge and told them that we would accept handover and they can continue repair work as per their schedule – it must ALL be completed within 2 weeks of the meeting yesterday.

So, yes… Handover. We take possession of the house on Monday next week. 9am. I’m still not feeling excited, though.

Today the ducts and controller for the aircon went in, and the plumber was finishing up with installation of vanity basins and taps. The electrician was also finishing up some odds and ends. Some pics:

The ensuite

The main bathroom vanity area

The dining and lounge ducts

There are still lots of patchups required both inside and out, and many other jobs, both small and large (mostly small), to be done prior to handover. Given that they want to do handover during PCI, and PCI is booked for three days from now, guess who isn’t holding out ANY hope that they will actually have it ready?

No expectations, no disappointment.

Personally, I’m much more excited about my two beautiful girls than this flippin’ house…
